Becoming a Person of Great Faith

“You come against me with a sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty... This day the Lord will hand you over to me... and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.” (I Samuel 17:46 NIV)

How do you face the fears that keep you from becoming the believer God wants you to be? If you want to be a person of great faith, do what David did.

Remember how God has helped you in the past. 1 Samuel 17:37 (NLT), David said, “The Lord who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from the Philistine!” When you remember how God has helped you in the past, it gives you confidence and greater faith for the future.

Use the tools God gives you. Saul tried to give David his own armor, but it didn't fit. Instead, David "picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them in his shepherd’s bag. Then, armed only with his shepherd’s staff and sling, he started across the valley to fight the Philistine” (1 Samuel 17:39-40 NLT). Don’t wait for something you don’t have—money, education, or connections— before you step out on faith. Use the tools God has already given you to face your giants with confidence.

Expect God to help you for his glory. David stormed the battlefield, shouting, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty... This day the Lord will have hand you over to me... and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel” (1 Samuel 17:45-46 NIV).

What God calls you to do, He will enable and empower you to do. Follow David's example: remember how God has helped in the past, and use the tools God gives you, and expect God to help you for His glory.

Now talk to God This is where you turn your thoughts into prayer. It could be a prayer of gratitude or praise. It could be a prayer of confession or a request for God’s help. It’s up to you.
